Bespoke Welsh Slate Plinth
Recently, we were honoured to play a small part in bringing to life the beautiful ‘En Pointe I’ sculpture by Masters & Munn. This elegant piece, crafted from a cold cast iron and aluminium blend, captures the grace and balance of a dancer perfectly poised en pointe.
A Limited Edition Work of Art
Welsh slate is renowned for its strength, natural beauty and durability making it an ideal choice for a plinth to support a statue. In this project, we carefully crafted a bespoke plinth to meet the client’s exact requirements.
From Design to Material Selection
After receiving a detailed design drawing including precise measurements and instructions on where to drill centrally to insert a steel rod, the process began with selecting the right material.
We searched through our yard to find a suitable piece of Welsh slate, a step that can sometimes be challenging particularly when a specific depth is required to ensure strength and stability.
Cutting and Preparation
Once the right block was selected, it was carefully sawn to the required dimensions. Using specialist equipment in our workshop we ensured accuracy and a high quality finish throughout the process.
Finishing Touches
The plinth was then polished to enhance the natural texture and appearance of the slate giving it a refined and professional look. As requested, the edges were softened to create a smoother, more elegant finish.
Craftsmanship and Harmony
With its natural texture and deep tones, Welsh slate provides the perfect contrast to the metallic finish of the sculpture. The polished surface adds a refined touch, while the solidity of the slate ensures a stable and durable base.
Final Result
The final piece achieves a perfect harmony between sculpture and plinth, a balance of strength, elegance and craftsmanship.
