THE LLD FAMILY
Our Story
Arfon Griffiths, owner of LLD Slate, has dedicated over forty years to the Welsh slate industry. His passion began at just sixteen, when a summer job in a local slate quarry ignited a lifelong connection with this timeless material.
Starting from the ground up, Arfon mastered the traditional crafts of splitting, dressing, and blasting slate. His sharp business acumen soon saw him rise to quarry manager, overseeing multiple famous Welsh quarries including Cwt y Bugail, Blaenau Ffestiniog, and Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda.
In 2007, recognizing a growing demand for smaller bespoke slate projects, all while nurturing a young family, Arfon established a workshop near his home and founded LLD Slate.
LLD Slate proudly sources its materials exclusively from the best Welsh quarries, Cwt y Bugail in Snowdonia and Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda, ensuring every piece reflects the unmatched quality and heritage of Welsh slate.
Rooted in decades of experience and a passion for craftsmanship, LLD Slate combines traditional skills with bespoke service, delivering slate products that are as durable as they are beautiful.
Using his expertise knowledge and producing many bespoke pieces, Arfon soon built an excellent reputation for quality slate became the favoured supplier for many UK and beyond companies creating slate pieces for the National Trust Wales, CADW and the Eisteddfod.
Over the years the business has grown, the yard has expanded and the investment into machinery means that LLD Slate can offer more high quality products and services without loosing any of its values and quality.
Arfon is now joined by his two sons Danial and Ifan - both with young families of their own and hopefully with a bit of early learning - the future of LLD Slate!
*LLD Slate means Llechi’r Ddraig in Welsh, which when translated means The Dragon’s Slate!

LLD Slate only work with the best slate which is quarried locally from both Cwt y Bugail Quarry in the heart of Snowdonia and Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda North Wales.

Often the first point of contact, Danial ensures every customer receives a warm welcome. From managing orders and coordinating deliveries to overseeing timescales, he plays a key role in keeping our operations organised and efficient.
Arfon Griffiths
Owner and founder of LLD Slate, Arfon possesses an exceptional depth of knowledge about Welsh slate. His expertise is second to none, and his passion for the craft is unmistakable, he can speak at length about even the finest details, a testament to his lifelong dedication to this unique natural material.
Ifan Griffiths
Working in the workshop alongside his father Arfon, Ifan plays an essential role in bringing each piece of slate to its final form. He specialises in the meticulous finishing and polishing processes that give every product its smooth, refined appearance. Ifan is also skilled in crafting bespoke memorials, applying care and attention to detail to create meaningful and lasting tributes for families.
