THE LLD FAMILY
Our Story
Arfon Griffiths, owner of LLD Slate, has worked in the Welsh slate industry for over forty years.
He started his career at the age of sixteen working a Summer job in the local slate quarry. Bitten by the slate bug he never left the industry. First learning the craft of splitting, dressing and blasting the rock and later with a keen mind for business, he soon progressed to quarry manager in charge of several of the Welsh slate quarries including Cwt y Bugail, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda.
Identifying the need for smaller more bespoke slate work, whilst nurturing a young family - Arfon built a small workshop near his home and established LLD Slate* in 2007.
Using his expertise knowledge and producing many bespoke pieces, Arfon soon built an excellent reputation for quality slate became the favoured supplier for many UK and beyond companies creating slate pieces for the National Trust Wales, CADW and the Eisteddfod.
Over the years the business has grown, the yard has expanded and the investment into machinery means that LLD Slate can offer more high quality products and services without loosing any of its values and quality.
Arfon is now joined by his two sons Danial and Ifan - both with young families of their own and hopefully with a bit of early learning - the future of LLD Slate!
*LLD Slate means Llechi’r Ddraig in Welsh, which when translated means The Dragon’s Slate!

LLD Slate only work with the best slate which is quarried locally from both Cwt y Bugail Quarry in the heart of Snowdonia and Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda North Wales.
Danial Griffiths
For many, Danial is the first point of contact. He works in the office, greeting customers, managing orders, deliveries and timescales.
Arfon Griffiths
Owner and founder of LLD Slate. There is nothing that Arfon doesn’t know about Welsh slate. Go on, ask him! He can happily talk for hours about the finer details - his passion for his craft is contagious.
Ifan Griffiths
Ifan works in the workshop with his father Arfon. Mainly responsible for finishing and polishing your slate, Ifan is also currently learning the craft of creating bespoke memorials.
