Looking After your Slate Hearth

A slate hearth is a beautiful and practical feature for any fireplace or stove. Naturally durable and timeless in appearance, slate can last for decades. With the right care you can keep your slate hearth looking its best and protect it from stains, heat marks and everyday wear.

Regular cleaning

For day to day cleaning, slate doesn’t need anything complicated.

  • Sweep or vacuum the hearth regularly to remove dust, ash and grit.

  • Clean with warm water and a mild pH-neutral detergent using a soft cloth.

  • Avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemicals as these can damage the surface and dull the natural finish.

Dry the hearth after cleaning to prevent water marks.

Dealing with stains and marks

Slate is a natural stone and can be porous meaning it may absorb spills if left untreated.

  • Clean up ash, soot or spills as soon as possible.

  • For stubborn marks use a stone safe cleaner specifically designed for slate.

  • Never use vinegar, bleach or acidic cleaners these can permanently etch the surface.

Sealing your slate hearth

Sealing is one of the most important steps in slate hearth care.

  • A good quality slate or natural stone sealer helps protect against stains, moisture and soot.

  • Depending on usage resealing is usually recommended every 12–24 months.

  • Always ensure the hearth is clean and fully dry before applying a sealer.

Sealing also helps enhance the natural colour of the slate, giving it a richer finish.

Protecting Against Heat and Damage

Slate is heat resistant but it’s still important to take precautions:

  • Avoid dropping heavy logs or tools directly onto the hearth.

  • Do not drag metal fireplace tools across the surface, as these can scratch the stone.

Long-Term Care Tips

  • Inspect the hearth occasionally.

  • Keep soot build up under control with regular chimney and stove maintenance.
